What is this training?
This practical course provides the background knowledge needed to teach all the components of beginning reading instruction. The instructional practices are designed to easily transfer to classroom lessons and can be integrated with any reading curriculum or published reading program.
This asynchronous course is broken into 11 asynchronous modules:
- Module 1: Literacy Basics
- Module 2: Oral Language
- Module 3: Phonemic Awareness
- Module 4: Phonics & Advanced Word Study
- Module 5: Fluency
- Module 6: Vocabulary
- Module 7: Sentence Structure
- Module 8: Text Structure
- Module 9: Comprehension
- Module 10: Reading Difficulties
- Module 11: Reading Assessment
Who is this training beneficial for?
Any educator who teachers reading. While the content is designed for K-3 educators, educators outside of these grade levels may find this training to also be beneficial. Title funds may be utilized for staff outside of K-3.
Does this meet the Act 20 requirement?
This training meets the K-3 professional development Act 20 requirement as this training is found on the CERI (Center for Effective Reading Instruction) approved list.
What are benefits of this training?
By working in a cohort with other CESA 3 educators, we aim to provide a collaborative and supportive space to share ideas and grow in our learning together. Our trainer, Jim Addison, brings his passion, experiences, and lifelong mission to improve literacy systems to facilitate 12 hours of course accelerators. In these accelerators, he aims to bring research to life and share how the information in the course can directly support educators of all age or grade levels.
How is the course set up?
While the course itself is asynchronous, we have set the pacing up with the busy teacher in mind.
Modules 1-3 will be completed during our first in-person kickoff day at CESA 3 in addition to our facilitated sessions.
Modules 4-8 will be completed separately with two 2-hour sessions to review and extend the material.
Modules 9-11 will be completed on your own time and reviewed at our final in-person session.

09JunKeys to Beginning Reading Kickoff!
In our in-person kickoff, we will review the outline of the course, set the ground work for the training, and begin modules 1-3. You will leave the day with 25% of the training already completed! With time in the morning to work through some of the modules, we will use time in the afternoon to review key information.

30JunVirtual Session #1
In this virtual session, we will review and expand on Modules 4 and 5: Phonics and Fluency. The session will be recorded.

14JulVirtual Session #2
This session will review modules 6-8 which are on Vocabulary, Sentence Structure, and Text Structure. This session will be recorded.
9:00 am-11:00 am -
28JulFinal Keys Session (In-Person)
Please have the course and final test finished before arriving. We will review Modules 9-11 which are on comprehension, dyslexia, and assessment.
